Feeling Kobe Bryant; or getting the worm

Are you more of a morning or night person?

Under duress, I am more of a morning person. It wasn’t by choice mind you; I became a morning person mostly because of my job. Teaching requires me to be up early. Most middle and high schools start before the typical 9 AM day at the office. In fact, most of the schools I’ve worked in have started classes at 7:30; with teachers having to report by 7:00.

The other day, I listed running late as one of my pet peeves. I grew up in a pathologically late family and I cannot stand being late to things. Even in social situations, I rather arrive to a party early than late; mostly because I don’t like the attention that running late garners.

Over the years, I’ve worked with teachers who will not only be late for the schools; reported start time; but they will walk in after the first bell rings, as the students are lined up at the door waiting for them. They will then turn on the light and walk into the classroom for the first time that day as their students file in. Personally, I cannot function like that. I like to walk in my room, get situated, make any necessary last-minute set-ups for the day’s, and finally catch my breath before students arrive. To each their own, I guess.

Being a morning person allows you the opportunity to do these things. There’s something impowering about know I’m getting the day started before everybody else. When it comes to facing the world for the day, I like the idea of the world coming to me, instead of me coming to the world.

Kobe Bryant – who, for my money, is the most tenacious athletic competitor I have ever seen – has spoken many times about his reasoning behind starting earlier than everyone else. Check out the video below…

Vintage Mamba mentality…

By getting up earlier and getting in one more practice session in each day, the extra hours add up; giving Bryant an edge on his competition. This is the work ethic that set him apart from his peers. In turn, that is where his talent sets him apart from them as well. And no, I’m not trying to pretend that I’m the Mamba of school teachers, but its a nice work work ethic to have all the same.

It beats showing up late. Besides, NO ONE likes having that last guest over who refuses to leave the party.

Are you more of a morning on night person? Why do you think that is?

this is a hard question– if i’m responsible for something, or need to do something for someone else (like work), i’d rather get into the office and get my $#@! done and then get out of there as soon as possible. but, if i’m only responsible for me, i’m going slooooooooooow to start my day, and staying up late! ( … the early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese) 🙂

That’s a good point. After all, cheese is a lot better than worms…
