Someday is today

What skills or lessons have you learned recently?

From the Roman poet, Horace, to Henry David Thoreau; from the cast of Rent, to Captain Jean-Luc Picard: the notion of making every day count has been passed down from generation to generation. I’ve heard this expression probably for the better part of my life. And as much as I would love to live my life according to that philosophy, it is always been a struggle.

I know I’ve talked about this a few times already in previous posts, but I think the one lesson that I have learned recently is that sometimes in life, you just have to take the time to do those things that you tend to put off.

Earlier this year, I made a couple of not-too-well coordinated road trips to Chicago and Pittsburgh, strictly for the purpose of attending Major League Baseball games in those cities. This is something that I’ve wanted to do for several years. I try to attend baseball games in different cities whenever I get the chance. That usually comes as a result of traveling somewhere for some other reason and just managing to get a game in while I’m there.

I know that going to baseball games isn’t like going to Hawai’i or Europe or skydiving. But for me, this is one of those things in life that I always wanted to do, but I always say to myself “I’ll get around to it someday“

This year, I’ve learned that someday IS today. And if it’s not, I have to make someday be today. I’m grateful that I didn’t have to learn this lesson to a very costly way, like losing a loved one. Something just went off in my head. i’m trying to keep it going. I didn’t want this to be just some kind of flaky summer thing.

Two weeks ago, I reunited with two old friends, whom I haven’t seen in almost 10 years. You can click the link here for more details about that.

Last night, I did something I’ve been meaning to do for the last few years. You could read more about that here.

This new attitude is still a work in progress. It’s something that must be consciously practiced every day. It’s so easy to fall into the everyday routine and the “ lives of quiet desperation” I hope to carry this well over into the new year and beyond.

What is a skill or lesson that you have learned recently?
