It’s like a man cave, but for writing
As a fan of pro wrestling, one of the podcasts I listen is 83 Weeks. It features Eric Bischoff, the head of WWE’s greatest rival from the 1990s, World Championship Wrestling. Its title is a reference to the 83 weeks in which much WCW’s then-flagship show Monday Nitro Live! best WWE’s Monday Night Raw in direct head-to-head ratings on Monday nights during the late 1990s.
I mention Bischoff because he will often make references to his home in Cody, Wyoming. From the sounds of it, Bischoff bought himself a big chunk of land in Wyoming, built a house on it, and enjoys the rustic life and just being in the middle of nature. Evidently he had his own home office. Whether or not it is attached to his house, I do not know.
For my own ideal writing and reading space, I like something that looks like this: rustic and secluded. Maybe there’s a little bit of Henry David Thoreau in me with this; my own version of the cabin on Walden Pond. I would like an area where I can read, write, video, maybe even produce a podcast.
Since budget is not an issue in this writing prompt, I would want a writing space that is secluded from other people without being cut off from the world. Such a space would require a full desktop computer internet access, refrigerator, a chair or a comfortable couch. Possibly both.
I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me. But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
It would mainly have to be a secluded area where I can control the amount of distractions and interruptions I get; a place where I could escape in my thoughts, but check in with the world and as needed. All of this would have to be in an office setting picturesque enough to double as a background for video conferencing and podcasting.
The crazy part of this is that I’m not even much of an outdoorsy kind of guy. But when I see Bischoff’s office on 83 Weeks, that’s the kind of space I would love to work in.
What does your perfect space for reading and writing look like?
