What books do you want to read?

Oprah ain’t got nothing on me..

There’s a lot of books that I want to read. Almost more than that, there are several books that I have started reading that I would like to finish. So here’s a small sampling of books that are on my shelf, as well as books that are in my Amazon cart.

I started reading Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina at the beginning of the month. I’m getting to the point where I have to get back into the book in the next few days, or else I will put it aside also.

A couple years ago, I started reading, Moby Dick, but as an e-book. I still have a copy of the book on my Google Drive, and I would just like to finally finish it. I think the problem with this book for me has been the fact that it is an e-book. I still prefer hardcopies of novels; the tactile sensation of holding it in my hands, and being able to mark the book up as I see fit

I’ve always been grotesquely, fascinated by the church of Scientology. In fact, when Leah Remini’s A&E series was on, I bought a copy of Dianetics just to see what it was all about. I’m about 150 pages into it, and I’m still waiting for the part where people get sucked into this cult.

For years, I’ve not wanted to read The Quran. Not because I want to convert or anything, but because I just want to learn more about the religion.

To that end, I’ve also wanted to read The Bible from cover to cover. I know that a lot of the book actually explains how to prepare for religious rituals, but again, I just want to say that I’ve read it from beginning to end; but this one’s not a high priority read for me.

For years, I’ve also taught about wanting to read Ernest Hemingway. I think this year and finally going to make it happen. I will probably start with The Old Man and The Sea.

And if a book happens to be on somebody’s “banned list“ somewhere, you can guarantee that I want to check it out!

I know there’s more, but three partially completed books and three books I would be starting from scratch makes for a pretty good jumping-off point.

All good stuff. A bit of Sci Fi and interesting cultural ties too.

If by sci-fi, you’re referring to Dianetics, I don’t think this particular book gets into Xenu, or the interstellar war. I think Dianetics just deals more with the “psychology” aspect of it. Unfortunately. I could use a good laugh!

I’d have to go further down the rabbit hole to get to that point. And I’m not willing to do that.

I haven’t touched Dianetics. I know Hubbard was a sci fi author before he went down the other path.
There are better places to get a laugh.

As a Star Trek fan, I’m sickened by the fact that Gene Roddenberry was friends with L Ron Hubbard.

Yeah. That is a bit off. Not sure if it was a bromance to the end or a good relationship that decayed behind the scenes.

Yeah, Roddenberry was a weird cat though himself. I think in later years, he really started to believe the hype that he was some “man who saw the future of humanity”; rather than a TV writer who had a really good idea.

I read Anna Karenina a few years back. I couldn’t put it down. 😊

It’s taking me a little time to tell the characters part early on, but I can definitely feel myself getting into the book already

That’s a pretty diverse list. I have a few books that I’ve partially read and then put down and I’m debating picking up again because I’d probably have to restart on page 1.

It gets kind of frustrating for me, because during the school year, I will usually end up rereading whatever I’m teaching my students that year. Even if it’s something I’ve read multiple times.

That just makes it harder for me to want to do some recreational reading
