Thoughts on the Super Bowl From a Non-Viewer

That’s right. I didn’t watch the Super Bowl for several reasons. Actually, that’s not entirely true. I did catch the overtime – for what that was worth.

But my decision to skip most of the game wasn’t out of some non-conformist hipster tantrum. The truth is, with the Lions having been lousy for so long, the game has become an afterthought for me. My big game tradition is…not watching it.

Another reason is that the game has bloated into such and enormous entertainment monster that the actual football game often gets lost in the shuffle.

For a lot of non-football fans, the commercials have been the big draw, dating back to Apple’s legendary Macintosh ad in 1984. However, many of the Super Bowl ad are released online several days in advance. Furthermore, many ads, like the spot for the Deadpool & Wolverine movie prompted views to check out the trailer via YouTube.

For those who aren’t entertained by either the game or the commercials, there’s the halftime show. Personally, these halftime performances have missed the mark more often than they hit. This is, in part, because I’m a rock guy and there’s not a lot of rock performances during the big game anymore. The few that we’ve had in the last 15-20 years were by rockers well past their prime.

By most accounts, the first half of last nights game was low-scoring did that led to many fans in the Detroit area lamenting ā€œthe Lions could have smoked both these teamsā€. I’ll get back to the Lions in a minute.

As I mentioned, I did see the overtime; which apparently was played under different rules for the first time ever. Why the NFL doesn’t just play a fifth quarter is beyond me.

I don’t hate either of them, but I’m sick to death of hearing about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. We get it. They like each other. I was seriously waiting for him to propose to her at the 50 yard line after the game in what would have been the supreme act of cheesiness.

In 18 months, Taylor will be releasing a song about breaking up with Travis. You heard it here first.

But most of all, I didn’t watch last night game because the Detroit Lions beat the Chiefs in the season opener back in September. They, were outplaying the 49ers for the first half of the NFC Championship game two weeks ago. All in all, the Lions outplayed both of those teams for 6 quarters – dying the most successful season the team has had in 60 years. I’m fully convinced the future is bright for the Lions franchise, but it was just a bitter pill to swallow last night.

I’m not trying to sound snooty. These are just my reasons for not watching the biggest sporting event of the year. But pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training on Thursday. That’s when MY favorite game returns.

I know A LOT of non-football fans watch the last night (including Kid 1!) What are some of your thoughts about the game, or the entertainment surrounding it?

Sorry about your Lions. I don’t care about football, but I’m the wife and mother of true blue NE Patriots fans. Being from Boston, liked the ā€œDunkingsā€ ad the best. I enjoyed Usher and his special guests, especially Ludacris & Lil Jon. I also liked those Broadway costumes at the beginning. Taylor & Travis are adorable. I stayed up just to see them together at the end. So cute. 🄰

A lot of people are saying Ludacris and Lil John saved Usher’s performance.

Yeah, they brought it home! But I liked the whole halftime show. Shades of Michael Jackson in Usher’s dancing. He’s smooth and a pro.

And that’s the amazing thing about the Super Bowl: people who don’t watch football all all season (and in some cases, people who don’t watch ANY other sports) will tune in for the Super Bowl.

I saw the second half and the OT. Paid half ass attention because honestly, I gave up on football for this season midway through the Pats atrocious year. šŸ˜„
I’d have the games on, but they were really just background noise and the occasional pause to shake my head in disgust lol
Last night I worked on some posts that are going up later this week. More rewarding use of my time

Yeah the Pats had a rough year. As a Lions fans, I can relate because most of the last 60 seasons were like that.

Yeah, I can’t really bitch too much. We had 20 pretty damn good ones round here. The ride had to end at some point. šŸ˜ŖšŸ˜„
And at least I have the Celtics and Bruins to console me a bit this year. Unless they both choose to blow it in the postseason again this year lol

Dude, I feel your pain. The Pistons are circling the drain and getting ready to go from the toilet to the sewer… šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

Yeah, I’ve seen that. They are having a very rough season indeed. I actually thought the C’s were going to drop a home game to them last month. They came damn close!

I went to bed and read the highlights. That was enough for me.

I watched the game. I just posted my ā€œNot Sour Grapesā€ observations here.

My evaluation of the halftime show:šŸ‘Ž But I’m not a hip-hop fan.

The best commercial, in my opinion, was the BMW commercial with Christopher Walken. Otherwise, there were few memorable ones.

I watched some of it. After the Chiefs took the lead, I changed the channel. I’m with Rob. I can’t stand in this Taylor Swift thing any longer. My favorite commercial was the Dunkings. That just cracked me up. My favorite coffee is Dunkin’ Donuts, so I was cool with that. I’m sorry about Detroit Rob. I’m not really a football fan, I will watch the Eagles if they’re winning, but Detroit has the best uniforms. They are very pretty. I know that sounds awful, but I’m a fashion person. šŸ˜†

That Honolulu blue and silver really does pop! I’m hearing rumors that they might get a new uniform design for next year. But I’m pretty sure they’re gonna keep the colors.

As long as they keep the colors, I’m happy. 😊
