Rob Reviews…The Defenders

At last, I have reached the culmination of a combined total of 39 hours of watching Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. I’ve made it to the one and only season of The Defenders. Notice I don’t mention Daredevil, because that show has actually been fun to watch.

If 2012s The Avengers, was the culminating, final act of phase one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). then The Defenders is the grand finale for the first season of Marvel’s “the defenders saga“

Just as The Avengers saw Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor join forces, The Defenders sees the MCU’s “Street level heroes” Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist join forces against a threat too big for anyone of them to face alone. And in the same story telling format that helped phase 1 of the MCU make loads of money, The Defenders is the intersection of stories that were started in each of the four shows, with supporting characters and subplots spilling over from one show to the next.

Three episodes in and so far I’m loving the pacing of the show, much more than what I saw in the three previous Marvel titles. The Defenders builds up the anticipation of seeing the four heroes finally come together. It’s not until the very end of episode 2 that we see any of them directly interacting. Clocking in at only 8 episodes – as opposed to it’s predecessors 13 episode season orders – I’m assuming that The Defenders will keep up this pace

One of the biggest criticisms of Iron Fist was the fact that both Danny Rand, and the actor who played him, are white – even though the character is Caucasian in the comic books as well. It’s interesting the way that The Defenders confronts white privilege during an argument between Danny and Luke Cage, as if the show runners were addressing the controversy on-screen. in the truest Marvel tradition, the heroes initially find themselves at odds with one another; only to come together to unite against a common foe – in this case, The Hand.

I have never actually sat down and watched the Netflix Marvel shows, despite seeing almost all the Disney MCU ones. Perhaps I will peruse these sometime. Thanks, Rob!

The general consensus seems to be that daredevil was the best show, and then they all gradually declined a little bit afterwards. But I feel like defenders was probably the best thing I’ve seen since season one of daredevil.

Three. Even pages online that recommend a viewing order going from one season of one show to the next, in order for it to make sense. You know, typical marvel fashion.

Ah yes. The “let’s jump all over the continuum” tactic. This is why I have not gotten into the Arrowverse yet either. I’d love to, but for all the crap to truly make sense, you need to hopscotch among about 5 or 6 shows. 🙄
