The most confident person I’ve ever know was my Dad. Don’t get me wrong. there were a lot of things he wasn’t confident about. But in general he exuded confidence in a way that made me feel more confident about myself.
I’m pretty sure I’ve told a story before on the blog, but I think back to my wedding day. I wasn’t having cold feet or anything, but I think the enormity of the moment was starting to overwhelm me. I was pacing up and down across the basement floor of my childhood home. The old man came down to talk to me. He said “Rob, what do you do today isn’t really gonna change your day-to-day life at all.“
It made perfect sense. X1 and I had been living together for almost 5 years at that point. Yeah, we were going to wear wedding rings and refer to each each other as our spouses, but basically that was about it. After hearing those words of straight up reality from The Old Man old man, I got myself together and went to the church. The rest is history.
But that’s exactly how The Old Man was. He was the calm center at the middle of every storm. He was the ultimate realist, sometimes painfully so. I guess he could say he exuded confidence through rational thought, if that makes any sense. He had a way of cutting right to the heart of the matter.
