From sea to shining Sea

You’re going on a cross-country trip. Airplane, train, bus, car, or bike?

If I was to make a cross-country trip, I would want to make it by car. Actually, I made a cross-country road trip once, several years ago. I wrote about it on a post I called Rob & The Great American Road Trip. The problem with that trip was we didn’t really stop to do much sightseeing. We were trying to get to California as quickly as possible, so we did.

We have always romanticized the idea of making the cross country trip by car. I must admit that I have totally bought into that notion. Maybe I listen to too much Doorsmusic, or played “life is a highway“ – the original version by Tom Cochrane mind you – one too many times. I’m sure reading “on the road“ by Jack Kerouac didn’t help me either.

I would want to stop and see all the sites, take photos, blog about it; do everything I could to chronicle as much of the trip as I could possibly remember. I know the traveling by plane is much safer and quicker. But for me, that just takes all the fun out of the trip. As the old saying goes “sometimes it’s about the journey, not the destination” as for other forms of transportation, I’ve never really been much of a bike guy. Even when I was a kid, I rode my bike, but I wasn’t the kind of kid who rode it everywhere I went.

Of course, reality is starting to set in for me. I’m 49 years old and quite honestly even going down to South Carolina to see Kid 1 one is putting a lot of more wear and tear on my body as well as my car. Every time I make the trip now, I would swear that it’s getting a little bit longer. Obviously, the distance from here to there isn’t changing. Rather, the trip is taking a greater toll on my body the older I get.

I’ve always wanted to hop on the car and go west… but you are right, the wear and tear on the body when you get older…
