If I could do one thing to improve my community, I would address the empty retail spaces. There’s still a good deal of construction in my area, but the online shopping boom (partially due to covid) a lot of traditional brick and mortar retailed stores in my area have close.
It’s a little shocking today because construction and city’s population kept climbing for years. I live in the same area i originally grow up in, and it seems like the change in the economy, the population and property values seemed like they would never stop climbing.
I know none can force businesses to move into an area, but if you have empty storefront, I would insist that owners re-develop the property. Ideally, I would prefer that they just tear down the storefront and let the land redevelop naturally. Don’t get me wrong, the blight is nowhere near as bad and one would see in Detroit. Few place in America, or the rest of the world, have ever experienced blight on that level
