The Lucrative Legend of Caitlin Clark

With the NCAA women’s March Madness tournament winding down, we are seeing the last few games of Iowa Guard Kaitlyn Clark’s college basketball career.

If you’ve been paid even the slightest shred of attention to the sports world over the last several months, you’ve probably heard of Caitlin Clark. Late this season, she broke the NCAA basketball’s all-time scoring record, having surpassed Pistol Pete Maravich.

I was lucky enough to watch the record setting game, when Fox aired the game nationally on February 15.. I was surprised to see that Clark is already doing Star Farm commercials as well; a perk of the NCAA’s new NIL deal which allows college players, to make money off of their name, their image, or their likeness. Earlier this week, the rematch against LSU drew over 12 million viewers, the largest audience ever for any women’s basketball game.

Recently rap legend, Ice Cube, who owns the big 3 basketball league, offered Clark $5 million to come play for the league. As of this time, it appears at Clark is planning to enter the WNBA draft.

Already, Clark is probably done more for women’s college sports than any athlete ever. So the question is: what’s next? Is Clark going to become the first truly transcendent superstar of the WNBA? Can she do for the WNBA what Michael Jordan did for the NBA? Or what Tiger Woods did for pro golf? Can she pull in those non-WNBA fans and get them to watch her sport?

I think this is an extraordinary moment for the WNBA. The Las Vegas aces recently announced that they sold out their entire allotment of season tickets for the 2024 season. And unless the Indiana Fever pulls a Sam Bowie, they will choose Clark as the overall number one pick in this spring’s WNBA draft.

Beyond a baseball, I’m not a really big sports guy, but I to keep my finger on the pulse of the sports world, enough that if I was in a crowded bar, or around a TV with a group of strangers, I would be able to carry my own in a conversation. that in mind, Caitlin Clark has definitely caught my attention, for whatever that’s worth. I’m fascinated to see how her career unfolds.
