I don’t talk a lot about it, but one thing that one of my family members did for me that really stands out, was in the fall out of my divorce. When I first moved to Michigan, my sister, kind of took it upon herself to introduce me to her circle of friends at the time. She had been through a divorce herself a few years prior, so I think she was kind of sympathetic in that regard.
After my divorce, I was shattered. I had to pick up the pieces of my life. I moved back home and I was unemployed. I had to strike a balance between getting back on my feet and having some fun. This was where the Rebuilding in “Rebuilding Rob” began. HERE is a link to a 2012 post – back from when I was hanging out with the Social Club in the fallout from my separation. God, that feels like a lifetime ago…
The experience really got me out of my shell again. They were all the members of a social club, which would take part in happy hours at bars, and would also do intramural sports leaves, like kickball, volleyball, softball – things like that. My sister’s circle of friends in particular was an interesting group. They kind of have their own drama within them – with certain people hooking up with each other and interpersonal conflicts. And while it wasn’t anything that was gonna last any real long-term, it was just a great opportunity for me to get back out there again to be social.
The biggest drawback for me was that this, in conjunction with my divorce, let to the heaviest drinking I’ve ever done in my life. I never did anything stupid or got into any trouble; but I had a few close calls – enough to scare me sober.
