Rob and the Work-life balance

Daily writing prompt
How do you balance work and home life?

I think over the years, I’ve managed to start a good balance between home and work, without even realizing I did it.

Like a lot of teachers, I used to get part-time jobs during the summers not because I needed the money, but just because I had the extra time on my hands and an opportunity to put a little extra cash in my pocket. Once the Covid lockdown took place, I was really in no mood to work beyond the school year; at least until this year.

I think it’s a teacher, more so than a lot of other careers, it’s very easy to blur the lines between the work – life balance. Teaching is a career that requires… No, demands… That you take the work home with you. And I don’t just mean lesson planning and grading papers. Your students really do become a part of your life. The things that they go through in their own personalized effect to you. Cliché to say this, but during school, there is no time clock that you punch in and punch out on. I’ve known a few teachers over the years who finish all of their grading and lesson planning at school – they refuse to take anything home with them. I know that, in their own way, that so I’m trying to draw a line on the sand between their work and personal lives. The problem is, those are usually the teachers who are either not very successful or not very dedicated. That’s just not me. I can’t do that.

Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.

Dolly Parton

I know I speak very highly about teaching, but at the end of the day, it’s still a job. I’m reminded of the famous words of Dolly Parton who said: “don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”

For the first time in probably four years, I’m going to be getting a part-time summer job. Two of them is a matter fact if things go well. I’m going to teach summer school and hopefully get a job at my local semi-pro baseball stadium. Doing all of that will put my work-life balance to the test; but I don’t think once summer, this will kill me

Of course, I’m going to make a point of having some fun this summer as well. As of now, I have a road trip to Cincinnati planned for a baseball game in July. I hope that there are a few more road trips coming up as well. .

I have friends and family in the teaching profession. Their literally is no boundary between work and life. It’s difficult not to get burned out.

I think the statistic I heard when I was in college was at 50% of teachers leave the profession within their first five years. 😳

Wow. I have a good friend who is a wonderful teacher. But she’s just tired and burned out. She cares so much, that’s why she puts in the countless hours. But after thirty years, it takes its toll.

I once considered a career change to teaching. Then I realized I’m not sure I can handle all those kids at once. That’s a daunting task…

It is a lot. There are days when I hate it. But most of the time, I cannot imagine myself doing anything else.
