If I had a tagline, I think my would be the same as a tagline I use for this blog “building a more perfect man”. I’m not perfect. I’m nowhere near perfect. And I don’t pretend to be perfect. But I’m trying Every day, to be better.
My best
Lately, I am hearing more and more people
people answer the question “what do you do?” with the response “my best. I do my best.“ That’s how I think of myself. I was trying to do my best. I was trying to do a little bit more than I did the day before. Of course, I think that’s response. Also, lends itself more to the idea that we are not defined by occupations, but I digress.
AS A SIDE-NOTE: there’s an anecdote I came across the other day on social media where an American tourist was talking to a local in Italy. I am paraphrasing here as I don’t remember the exact exchange verbatim:
The American asked the Italian “what do you do?“ The Italian said, I laugh, I smile, I cry, I spend time with my family.” The Italian reciprocated with the same question. The American said “I’m an engineer,” the Italian last. Then he said “you Americans, you define yourselves by your jobs”. Again, I’m paraphrasing here, but you get the point. Why do we as Americans define ourselves by our work?
Trying to be better
Also, in the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man trilogy, Peter Parker offers a similar response to the question “how are you?” To that, Peter replies “I’m trying to be better.” Again, I feel like that is a reflection of my attitude towards life. I’m trying to be better. I’m not perfect; nor do I try to be. But I am trying to get a little bit closer to perfection every day.
A page from the Founding Fathers
Now, admittedly, when I thought up of the tagline “building a perfect man“ I was was thinking of a direct call back to the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States. God knows they weren’t perfect. But the great thing is that they understood that too. They knew that they didn’t have all the answers
The algorithm is strong with this one
After I started drafting this entry, I came across this TikTok post. It just seems appropriate. I think the universe was talking to me.
I usually find Tony Robbins to be ultra cheesy; and then I see a clip like this. I needed this today as I’m thinking about today’s prompt, and reflecting on Kid 1’s childhood.
He says something incredibly deep in this video: “we overestimate what we can do in a year; and we underestimate what we can do in a few decades.” I think that is just so indicative of this mass produced, fast food, processed, social media culture that we live in. We don’t just want immediate results. We want results 10 minutes ago. The truth is, real change takes real time.
