I feel like I’ve answered several different variations on this prompt over the last year. But if you want my response, right now, in a gun-to-my-head moment, I will tell you that my favorite historical figure of the moment is Malcolm X.
I think there’s a thing that happens in our society where people don’t understand why I would read and be fascinated by the works of a black man when I am myself a white man. It’s almost as if people think that there’s this thing where one cannot learn something from somebody of another race or ethnicity. I think the same is true if a man actually gleans something from a piece of feminist literature; it’s as it people want to say Why would you want to read that?
The Autobiography of Malcolm X is probably the most influential book I’ve read in the last 20 years. I’ve actually gone back and reread several lectures of it and again over the years. In fact, I wrote a post about The Autobiography… HERE. In another post, I identified Malcolm X as the famous person whom I would like to meet.
