Of books, battles, and Batman

Daily writing prompt
On what subject(s) are you an authority?

Like a knee – jerk reaction, I feel like the subject I’m an authority on are primarily the ones that I teach in school: English and history. That’s not to say that I’ve read every single book ever written. But when I do read particular novel, especially one I’m going to teach, I feel like I do a good job getting a very firm brass on it. Likewise, as dorky as this sounds, I’ve also thought of myself as something of a grammar fanatic. Again, it’s something that I take a good deal of pride in being good at.

I would love to sit here and say some sort expert on some different aspects of world history; as I’m also certified to teach history. However, I’ve never really had the chance to actually teach a history class, and I must admit that I’ve gotten rather rusty on the subject.

Outside of my work life, I’ve always been something of the nerd. Maybe a “pop culture aficionado“ would be a better way of phrasing it. I’m a big fan of the Star Trek franchise, I like to think that I am pretty knowledgeable about those shows. in addition, Batman was probably my earliest and all-time favorite comic book character. For about 15 years, I bought pretty much every Batman book that was released by DC comics. So again, I like to think that I’m something of an authority when it comes to the history of Batman.

Tell me about a subject on which you are an authority.

I’ve been debating about writing this comment. I’m going to go ahead in the spirit of camaraderie and friendship. Also, I will tell you that I, a two-time spelling bee champ, taught my kids how to spell burgundy, but wrongly. Don’t ya know my second kiddo got that word in a spelling bee and spelled it wrong, thanks to his excellent speller mother. And my husband mispronounced determine because he read it long before he ever heard it. so he thought it was DEEterMyne.

That said, I have not heard the phrase “got a good brass” and I would have written “got a good grasp.”

I loved your post and know who to
    come to with batman questions!

Thanks! I’ll have to go back and double check it. I usually write a lot of my posts using voice dictation, just because I’m too lazy to type.

Unfortunately, voice dictation doesn’t work quite as fast as we normally, naturally speak.

And then, even when I go back to revise it, I do that thing that most of us do: where we read it, and we know what we mean to say in our minds and we just mentally change it without actually making the correction.
