A few days of one year ago, we were asked this exact same prompt. I gave you one sentence answer, and somehow posted it. So I will attempt it again.
But let me give you a little story to set this up:
Back when I was powered, one had an apartment off campus. It was in, admittedly, the worst neighborhood in town. So in fact, several of the local pizza places used to deliver pizza as we were literally on the other side of the railroad tracks” in the low income housing part of the town.
One day, it was almost 5 PM and we decided that we wanted to order a pizza. It was late spring, so the sun was still up. He had occurred to me that since it wasn’t dark yet, maybe I could find a pizza place that would actually deliver to us across the tracks.
I gave one of them a call and I explained the situation:
ME: hi. I would like to order a pizza. But I have to tell you an advance and then I’m on the other side of the railroad tracks. I know it’s a little after five, but it’s still daylight outside. Would you guys be willing to deliver?
PIZZA GUY: let me check with my manager.
PIZZA GUY: (talking to manager in the background) I got a guy on the line. Who’s wondering if we will cross the railroad tracks to do deliver a pizza.
MANAGER: what does he sound like?
PIZZA GUY: sounds like a perfectly ordinary non-gun-owning white guy.
PIZZA MANAGER responds incoherently in background
PIZZA GUY (on phone): yeah, my manager says we can deliver it. But I’ll have to bring it myself.
ME: awesome! Here’s what I need…
X1 and I were so grateful that he was willing to deliver, but I gave him a pretty substantial tip that day. But it was that way that he described me, such a blanket, generalization, and yet it was spot-on.
This incident happened nearly 30 years ago somehow it remains in my memory. , And a couple of my other social media profiles, for the real me anyway, I use that wine to describe myself .
So, to answer this prompt, I would still didn’t describe myself as common quote in perfectly ordinary non-gun-owning white guy”.
