Daily writing prompt
Who are your favorite artists?

As I mentioned last year, when I wrote on this prompt, artist is really an incredibly vague term. It covers a lot of different media. For my previous response to this prompt, I chose to write about Vincent van Gogh, which you can read about below…

For today’s response , I’m going to focus on the musician/songwriter, poet and actor Henry Rollins. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of most of his music; but I am a big fan of his spoken-word performances. He’s he injects a great deal of hyper awareness and self-deprecating humor into his stories about life as a musician, actor and writer.

I own just a few of Rollins’ books and a few of his albums. For me, the biggest draw of Henry Rollins is that he always talk about self-doubt, low self-esteem, and rising above those mental barriers. The work of Henry Rollins was very formative for me during my late teens and early 20s. It has very much helped make me the man that I am today.

It’s hard to remember sometimes that this guy was the lead singer of Black Flag and Rollins Band…

Interestingly enough, Rollins has not been an active musician since 2003. He has said in numerous interviews that he may never make music again – mostly because he is “out of lyrics”. Even if he never records again, his musical catalogs form both Black Flag and Rollins Band speak for themselves.

This may be my favorite performance from Woodstock ‘94…

The thing I’ve always taken from Henry Rollins is that he is very much a “student of life”; he seems like he is open to hearing a new ideas coming new facts, new information. I try to be like that myself. I try to be constantly yearning to learn more, to understand people more, just to learn more about life and the world in general.
