What’s something you would attempt if you were guaranteed not to fail.

If I knew I could not, or would not fail, I would probably choose to become a professional baseball player.

If you’ve read more than one or two entries on this blog, you probably know how much I love the game of baseball. And while I say “professional” baseball player, I would probably do it for free, given the opportunity.

I have always been more of a Field of Dreams guy than a Bull Durham guy. I romanticize the game, probably too much, but I love everything about it: the sights, the sounds, The smells; hearing “Centerfield” by John Fogerty for 9.423 time at a game. I think it would be the coolest thing in the world to be on a baseball card! I don’t care if I was even the worst player in the league, I would love to be able to tell people “I’m a professional baseball player”

I think it would be nice to have winters off. Granted, ball players today need to stay in shape year-round. But it’s not like it was 70 years ago when players had to get a second job just to get by. Professional athletes – even the worst in their sport – make very good money today

We’re all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children’s game, we just don’t… don’t know when that’s gonna be. Some of us are told at eighteen, some of us are told at forty, but we’re all told

Scout Barry, Moneyball

I think about that quote a lot with professional athletes. Being fifty now, I would be way beyond washed-up. I would be considered an “old-timer”. So many things in our society are built upon the idea that “youth is king”. I still don’t think of myself as being “old” yet; but I have a kid who’s going to start college next year! But there are people I graduated with who are now grandparents. I guess I’ve been thinking a lot about getting older lately. But between hearing about celebrities passing away and Mom having been hospitalized recently, that expected.
