And STILL my favorite cartoon!

What’s your favorite cartoon?

This should come as no surprise to anybody who knows me at all. Batman: The Animated Series is not only my favorite cartoon of all time; but in my opinion, it is also the definitive take on the Batman mythos. I truly feel that if one was only watch be: TAS from beginning to end, and have no other exposure to the Batman mythos, they would come away with a excellent understanding of who the character truly is.

The success of Batman: The Animated Series lead to the creation of Superman: the animated series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice league, international, and static shock. This collective of animated shows would come to be known as the DC animated universe, or DCAU. It was often referred to as the. Timmverse – a call back to series producer Bruce Timm. . Furthermore, it’s fair to say that the success of the DCAU lead to the plethora of feature length, direct-to-video, DC animated feature films.

Here’s what I had to say about Batman : the animated series in last year‘s response to this prompt

But I must admit that Batman: Caped Crusader has the potential to be an excellent runner-up. Check out my review of that show HERE.

Probably the best version of Batman. Gritty but not crazy dark like everything now, and some incredible voice acting by Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.

I’ve heard Mark Hammill interviews that, for the last several years before Kevin‘s passing, he wouldn’t even bother reading anymore DC animated scripts. He would be offered the script and his one question would be “is Kevin doing it?“ If he was, then Hammill signed on.

The same thing was true for Kevin Conroy. That’s why we would get “both or neither of them“ in the DC animated projects over the years.

They played off of each other well; a great acting team.

And just think, if Hamill had never been in that accident and gotten that minor facial scar that caused Hollywood to shun him for on camera work, we might never have gotten all his voice acting performances.

You should check out some of Conroy & Hamill’s work in DC Universe Online via YouTube. The game jumped the shark years ago, but they did great dialog for the game.
