I feel like every day in my career is an example of me speaking publicly or putting on a performance.
When I decided I wanted to teach, one of the things I realized very early on was that I had to be comfortable speaking to a room full of students and commanding, or demanding, their attention. I had to see if not only was I comfortable doing that, but if that was something that I actually wanted to do. Fast-forward 20 years, I’m still doing it. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else for a living.
But here’s one thing I didn’t mention even in my response to this pro from last year: whether it’s public speaking, a public performance, teaching, or anytime that one is the center of attention: it is never easy. For all of us – teachers, actors, artists, musicians, politicians, public speakers – there’s always a little bit of nerves involved. In fact, I would go as far as to say that if you weren’t a little bit nervous speaking up or performing in front of a group of people, then you probably shouldn’t be doing.
