When’s your hour to shower?

As WordPress is continuing to recycle the same old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today.

What are your thoughts about morning vs. evening showers? (Or… afternoon?)

The whole bathing/shower ritual is kind of a weird thing. I understand that different cultures and different societies have different ideas on hygiene. Having said that, if I go delve into any blanket generalizations here, I sincerely apologize.

I know that many cultures, smelling like soap or shampoo, deodorant, and cologne or perfume is not considered “being clean“. In many cultures for instance, people prefer to maintain some of their natural body odors. I think to a lot of Americans, showering every day isn’t so much about feeling clean as it is about feeling “sanitized”.

All I can really speak to is the American perspective on showers – as this is the only culture I’ve ever lived in. Here in America, as long as people have the means (and the time of course) they will shower once per day. Some people, depending on their level of comfort, will actually shower multiple times per day.

Personally, I happen to have dry skin; dry enough to keep a dermatologist gainfully employed for many years. If I can avoid it from time to time, I try not to shower every single day, just to give my skin a break. Of course, if I am sweaty, dirty or have that grimy feel, I’ll definitely take a shower regardless of my how dry my skin is.

To answer today’s prompt, it really depends on the day of the week for me. I started to notice, in the last few weeks in particular, that taking showers on weekday mornings is almost essential for me to help wake up and get me in the “getting ready for work” state of mind. This is to say nothing about how calming running water, or how soothing warm water feels in the anatomy.

Weekends, on the other hand are different. I like to take things a little bit slower on the weekends when I can. I will get up in the morning and do what I need to do, but at some point of the day, usually when I get sick of having bad head, I will Eventually take a shower. When Kid 2 is over for the weekends, he and I usually take our showers mid-afternoon.
