The high cost of everything

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today.

What has become way too expensive?

In a word, EVERYTHING! Everything has become too expensive. I know I’ll sound like an old man talking about how cheap everything was “back in my day”. The problem – particularly in the last few years – has been that while things are getting more expensive, wages have not gone up commensurate. To put it another way, the dollar is buying less, and there aren’t enough dollars to make up for it.

Old Man Rob

I remember when Operation: Desert Storm – also known as the first Persian Gulf War – started in 1991, I paid $1.30 for a gallon of gas. Keep in mind, this is when Iraq invaded Kuwait, and concern of another “oil crisis” in the US caused gas prices to rise.

On September 11, 2001, I paid $1.69 for a gallon of gas. This was roughly 8 hours after the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were hit. At this point, we still didn’t know if World War III was about to begin.

Today, gas is roughly $3 per gallon here in Michigan. After crunching the numbers, and then economics expert, but off the top of my head, I guess this means the increase in the price of gas has been fairly consistent over the last 30 years.

On the flipside, I could tell you that as a teacher, teacher’s wages, have not tripled in the last 30 years. They haven’t even doubled come as far as I can tell. This is just more proof that things have become increasingly more expensive, and we just have not kept up to compensate for it. Thus we have this thing called inflation. And therein lies the problem.
