As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
Is there a hygiene habit you struggle to keep up with?
I don’t know if I can call this a “hygiene“ habit that I don’t keep up with per se, but I have really dry skin. In fact, I should probably be going to a dermatologist on a regular basis to get some prescription lotion for it. The scary part is older I get, the worst my skin gets.
OK. So I’m exaggerating a little bit with the title of this entry and the featured image. But my skin is pretty bad.
Summers are not too bad. And just like the weather, it starts to get better in the spring and then it starts to intensify again in the fall. But winter is a brutal for me. I probably don’t wear gloves outside as much as I should, which certainly doesn’t help. In addition, the forced air heat that we have in our cars and most of our homes. Places of work only make the situation even worse.
In the winter time, my fingers will get so dried out that my skin start splitting open and bleeding a little bit, almost like tiny cuts, along my knuckles and the other joints on my fingers. I can usually keep that pretty well under control though. Typically if I use some Neosporin and some Band-Aids, I’m able to cover up the cuts and get them to heal up quickly.
Kind of gnarly, I know, but the prompt was asking for this…
And it’s not that I don’t stay hydrated. I drink plenty of fluids. In fact, I drink a pretty good deal of water on a daily basis. My skin is just atrocious.
Phred has had a hot tub for 10 years or so. While I enjoy going in it, the bromine that she has to use in order to keep the water clean is even harder on my skin than regular swimming pool chlorine. In fact, it’s gotten to a point where I’ve realized that I have to shower almost immediately after getting out of the hot tub. If I don’t, I’ll develop a rash that will last for about a week.
All of this has made me very insecure, particularly about my hands. For as long as I can, remember, I’ve heard people make comments about how dry my hands are even something is brief as a casual handshake. I try to use moisturizer and what not. I really do. But I’m at a point where my hands are so dry that even if I think they’re looking and feeling a lot better, most other people still think that they’re very dry. That’s how bad they are.
I mentioned before that my skin gets even worse. The older I get. The last couple of years, I’ve been dealing with my feet doing the very same thing. To be honest, my feet are disgusting compared to my hands. I try to chalk it up as just happening with age as a lot of people have nasty feet; but it doesn’t really make it any better.
