As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What would the world be like without celebrities (specific to entertainment) and social media influencers?
I don’t know, but I would sure love to live in such a world!
I think in a world without celebrities or social media influencers, we would look to probably still athletes, maybe in some cases politicians, but hopefully we would look to intelligent, educated people to be our “influencers”.
I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but here in America, we worship our celebrities and social media influencers. No one likes to admit that, but it is true. We act like we know them, we act as if the project in media. And worst of all, most of us are too dumb to realize that they are capable of doing bad things
I think of a “celebrity“ like Neil deGrasse Tyson. The guy is famous because he is really smart. Honestly, how rare is that in the world today? I mean, people knew who Stephen Hawking was, but it’s not as if he was making appearances on every TV show under the sun. Granted, that could have been in part due to his physical Condition. But I do like the idea that Tyson will appear on various TV shows and talk shows and people will just ask him about things they don’t understand – things about science, things about the origins of the universe. And if you seen Tyson on TV very much, you would also know that he also espouses his opinions on a lot of other stuff as well.
Of course, Tyson is something of an anomaly. As I mentioned earlier, he’s famous for being intelligent. But what would the world be like if Neil Degrasse Tyson was more the rule than the exception when it came to fame? What if we had dozens of “famous people“ like Tyson who we can look to and try to emulate? Could you imagine kids wanting to go to college and get good grades in school so they could be like a Stephen Hawking or a Neil Degrasse Tyson?
for decades now, we’ve heard about “the dumping down of America”. Today we have a president who is a failed entrepreneur, a mediocre game show host and a convicted felon. How much lower can we set the bar for the highest office in our land? Wouldn’t it be nice to be have famous people that we strive to emulate because they are intelligent?
While I’m on the subject, my mind immediately goes to the opposite on the spectrum and I think about Haliey Welch, the Hawk Tuah Girl”. I assumed if you’re tech savvy enough to find this blog, you’ve probably heard of her. She’s probably the greatest example of someone become famous for having no real talent. Can you imagine her feeling her kids, or her grandkids how she got rich, or how she got her 15 minutes of fame? She may very well be a nice human being, but she is another example of someone attaining fame and fortune purely through dumb luck.
