Are you and your childhood best friend still friends? Why did it last, or why did it not last?
My childhood best friend is someone who I have written about previously on this blog. I referred to him in the past as “the apostle“ due to the strong religious convictions.
I have known The Apostle since I was in kindergarten. In fact, I believe we met on our first day of school there. That was 45 years ago.
We were very much typical kids of the 80s: we love Star Wars, we got into G.I. Joe. A little bit of transformers. And then we discovered girls. One thing about the apostle and I is that we never were interested in the same girl or get jealous of each other over a particular girl – mostly because we are nervous and when not very social back then.
But one thing that has I always brought. The apostle back together is our love of the Star Trek franchise. We both got into Star Trek the next generation when it debut in 1987. We were both record episodes on our VCR’s back then. Sometimes I would miss an episode, sometimes he would. In those cases we usually alone it takes to each other so we could get caught up.
As often happens, though, with childhood friends, we grew apart a bit in high school. He got involved with some academic clubs, I got involved with my school swim team – which is not to suggest that I was a jock or anything. But the point being, we went our separate ways. There’s never any animosity or anything. We just started running a different circles. But even despite all that, we still remain good friends. We even stayed in touch in college; with the apostle originally going to school out of state.
The Apostle was my best man in my wedding. to be honest, he probably wasn’t my best friend at that point, but it just felt right having him by my side as I got married.
Today, the apostle and I are still good friends. We still each other random Facebook messages talking about the latest episode of Star Trek or whatever bit of entertainment news is related to that franchise or the Marvel cinematic universe. The truth is, we have 45 years of back history together. That’s a hard thing to just let go of.
I don’t know if the apostle and I would necessarily become friends today, had we never met previously. We still have a lot in common, but we just walk in different circles. A lot of that could be because of our age as well. I said before how I feel like a lot of men just don’t have friends once they get into their 40s and 50s; certainly not like the ones they had as children or even in college.
I know it’s cliché to say this, but the apostle really is at where friend who I can go several months without talking to you; only for us to reach out to one another again and strike up a conversation as if no time has passed. That in and of itself is an incredibly rare thing in this world. And to have a friend for 45 years is equally rare.
