Rob Loves Books!

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What is your relationship to books and reading?

My relationship with books and reading is a lifelong love affair. I’ve enjoyed reading since I learned how to do it. When I was very young, my late aunt (Mother’s sister) was probably the one family member who did more to nurture my relationship with books and reading then anyone I know. She was always the relative who made sure to purchase me at least one book either at Christmas time or for my birthday.

I got older, I loved to collect books. Even if I didn’t read them. For me, books became something of a status symbol when I was in college. Guys in the 70s used to brag about their stereo system. Men in the 80s and the 90s Bride about their computer set up or even their compact collection. For me, my big brag has always been books. I love the fact that I have multiple shelves just full of books. Things I’ve read, and things that I plan to eventually read one day. There’s even a few that I’ve acquired simply for collectibility sake.

Today, I don’t read nearly as much as I used to. As an English teacher, during the school year, I end up reading whatever novels I’m teaching my students, even if I’ve read them before. Well, I don’t tear through books simply for the sake of reading them any longer, I have become a much more active reader. Most of the books I’ve read over the last few years have underlines and blue or black pen. Some books, like my copy of the autobiography of Malcolm X, has several lines highlighted throughout

Now that I recently finished teaching my 10th graders Of Mice and Men, i’ve moved onto some recreational reading. In this case, it is the novelization of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Yes, I know this is a notation of a 20-year-old movie. But I’ve heard for years that the novelization is a much better story than the actual film. I’m reading it now to see for myself.

Truth; it’s still very doable to get in major shape.

I’m not ready to think of myself as “a senior“ yet, but thanks for the link!

And it definitely is very doable to still get in shape. I guess more of what I was talking about is coming to terms of the fact that I don’t have a body that I had, or could’ve had at 20 or 30 or even 40.

Neither am I, yet that’s how society thinks of us anymore. Useless as employees and physical fitness should consist of aqua-aerobics with a pool noodle.

I wish I could collect books! They can be very expensive here, even used ones. My dream is to have an entire wall of bookshelves filled with all the books I have collected over time.

Every collection started with one item! Begin when you can and grow it from here, but it takes time. Good luck!
