Making No Memories in Vegas

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What popular vacation destination do you have no interest in visiting?

I have an easy answer to this prompt. Las Vegas. As of now, I have absolutely no interest in visiting Las Vegas, Nevada.

I’ve never been much of a gambler. In fact, when I engage in the activity that most people refer to as gambling, it’s really a misnomer. A “gamble” by definition suggests that there is a possibility of winning. When I gamble, all I do is lose. I’m not even much of a card player. I know that those are really the main draws to Vegas. Of course I know there are shows to see there as well.

I know the big trend over the last few years has been to have current popular music artists do “residencies” in Las Vegas, where they will play at a certain hotel or a certain venue for an extended stay; as opposed to touring the country. I’ve heard that it’s advantageous for the musicians to do it, for tax purposes – as they’re only paying income income taxes to one state. No doubt it also just saves him a ton of money on moving all their equipment from one location to another.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m fascinated by Las Vegas. I love the idea that organized crime built an entertainment spot in the middle of the desert. Likewise, I think it’s pretty amazing that major league sports teams are finally moving to Sin City. Next on the list is the Oakland athletics who are supposed to be moving to The Strip in 2028.

I must admit that there was a brief time when I wanted to travel to Las Vegas. This is when the Hilton had “Star Trek: the experience”. It went way beyond being just a show. There was an entire portion of the venue that was set up like the promenade from Star Trek deep space nine. Employees would be walking around in either Starfly uniforms or even dressed as different aliens from the Star Trek franchise. Gift shops and restaurants offered souvenirs and even food and drinks that were right from the Star Trek franchise. That is one thing that I am kicking myself in the head about never seeing in Las Vegas.

The really ridiculous part of me not wanting to go to Vegas – or me never having been to Vegas – is the fact that I have an aunt who has lived just outside of the city for roughly 20 years. She works in hospitality as well. Needless to say, she probably knows all the great spots and even all the cheap spots to visit when one is there. Phred is getting ready to go there next month, as she does every year with two of her closest friends.

By all accounts, everybody I know who has been to Las Vegas has had fun. In fact, I’ve never heard somebody say “I had a really lousy time in Las Vegas”. But until the Athletics move there, I don’t really see any reason for me to want to visit the city.

I’ve never been into gambling myself so I never saw much of a reason to visit Vegas. You’re right though that there are quite a few other things to do there.

I’m shocked the Athletics took so long to make the move BTW. The Oakland Coliseum was old and run down 30+ years ago, and the neighborhood around the Haggenberger Rd exit off of 880 (where the stadium is), is a… high crime area. Not South Chicago bad but bad enough.

BTW, I was at the 1988 Series game where Jose CanStrikeOut walked after that outfield pop fly.

CanStrikeOut 🤣. Awesome memory about the 88 series though!

I didn’t think the immediate area around the White Sox stadium on the south side was too bad, but I am from Detroit. So there’s that.

That’s what so much of the media forgets nowadays; Yeah, Canseco hit 40 home runs, but he was a horribly undisciplined hitter who swung for the fence at everything. As for the memory… Not so much. His grandstanding destroyed the team’s morale and prevented a possible comeback. It carried over to the rest of the series too. Fans at the game were dumbstruck for a couple of seconds, then the reaction was along the line’s of Hogan’s NWO heel turn. He was pretty much hated in Oakland after that.

The middle of a World Series game is no place to make a statement about how your ego isn’t getting fed enough.

As for Chicago, all I know is what I hear from current and former residents. Most of the City is nice, esp along the lake. Catch the wrong train into the South side after dark though and you’re probably not coming home.

It’s diff to imagine a baseball stadium on the strip. The crowds are going to make it difficult for the locals. It’s also hard to believe both the Raiders and the A’s will have left Oakland. Growing up with them up north, it just seems unnatural that they no longer will be there.
