Rob’s 2025 Men’s March Madness Bracket – Day 4 Updates

Sunday’s action wraps up the last big day – and arguably the most exciting part – of March Madness. The field of 64 has now been whittled down to the “sweet 16”. I know, technically it started as 68. I don’t count the “First Four”.

Before I get into how my teams fared, I realized Sunday that for their annual “tournament challenge“ espn.com lets contestants to create up to 25 brackets to submit. As you can see from this year, and last year, I stick by “the honor system” and only create one bracket. But if I were to create 25 brackets and enter them in the ESPN contest, I’d like to think that I might do pretty well with it.

Here’s how my bracket looks after Sunday’s games…

5-3 for Sunday’s games.
  • Number 1 seeds (in the East and West regions respectively) Florida and Duke knew their jobs and both advanced to the Sweet 16. Florida’s game was something of a nailbiter, as they beat #8 seed UConn by two points.
  • In the Midwest region, Kentucky beat Illinois, maintaining the illusion that I know what I’m doing with this.
  • Meanwhile in the east region, Alabama beat Saint Mary – a result that I think most people expected
  • #4 seed Maryland avoided an upset against number 12 Colorado State squeaking by 72–71. Good for the terrapins and good for the Big Ten conference; but bad for upset-happy bracketologists, like myself. Actually, I had Memphis, not Colorado State originally advancing to this game.
  • In the south region, #6 seed Ole Miss beats #3 seed Iowa State in something of an upset. However, we are reaching the point where any of the teams who make it this deep into the tournament can’t really be considered “upset“ anymore. this was one of my three misses of the day.
  • Also in the south region, #2 seed Michigan State beat #10 seed New Mexico. I had Marquette facing Michigan State for this one. although Tom Izzo is past his glory days with Michigan State, I’ve learned that you never underestimate him in March.
  • In the east, #5 seed Oregon got past #4 seed Arizona. Not only did I have Liberty in this game instead of Arizona, I had Liberty advancing to the Sweet 16.

With a 5–3 record for Sunday, combined with my 4-4 record for Saturday makes me 9–7 for the round of 32. When you add in games from the original round of 64, my record goes to 35–13.

Inevitably, with so many losses, armchair-analysts like myself reach a point that so many of our original pics have been eliminated, we can no longer even make predictions on the games going forward, as none of our teams are still in it. However, even with some losses, my bracket has held of well enough that the tournament is still keeping my attention.

Now the tournament takes a break until Thursday, when there are four games on the schedule
