As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What is a fashion trend you like and dislike?
I’m officially at that age where I really don’t know what are current fashion trends anymore. Actually, I know of one or two. So for the sake of this prompt, I will name one trend that I like – as in something that’s kind of timeless; and one current trend that I simply cannot stand.
Blue jeans

Levi’s used to have a slogan “quality never goes out of style“ and I have to agree with that. I’ve probably been wearing blue jeans since I was in third grade. Before that, Mother was buying me Toughskins from Sears. I don’t post photos of myself on this blog, but trust me. There is one photo of me that I think was taken on my first day of first grade. I’m wearing these checkered Tuscan pants with a yellow Minnesota Vikings T-shirt. And I swear to God I wasn’t colorblind.
I think I still remember that they were. My mom said to me “we’re gonna start buying new blue jeans for school next year”. I was so excited. Blue jeans have been in style since maybe the 1950s. However, then, they were so edgy that people who wore them we probably thought of us being “hoodlums”. It’s amazing though the way that things that seemed to stick around for a decade or two end up becoming very much mainstreamed. It’s kind of like the way that I walk around in my local grocery store and hear The Cure playing on the overhead speakers.
I like to think that I still wear “regular people bluejeans”. Thankfully, I have not ventured into the “Dad jeans” territory. Yet.
Kids are still wearing blue jeans today. Sometimes they’re baggy. Sometimes they flare out to bellbottoms. Some pairs of boot cuts. Others have straight cuts. And some are so tight that they look like they’re painted on. Which brings me to one current trend that I cannot stand…
Skinny pants

If you don’t have the right body for them, you should not be wearing skinny pants. I’m sorry, but it’s true. I remember a couple years back. Jessica somehow managed to convince me to let her buy me a pair of skinny jeans. I couldn’t stand them. She liked the look of them, but I just could not get used to the feel. After we broke up, I promptly donated them.
I seen photos of Kid 1’s prom experiences. The suits he wore had skinny pants to them. Again, this is not my style, but this is not my generation anymore either. Youth, as the said in the Van Halen video “Right Now” is king.
The thing about skinny pants is that they are a trend. I think you’ll always see some women wearing them, just for the sake of being revealing. But, eventually the masses will go back to wearing baggier pants again.
