Making memories, not dreams

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What is the difference between “living” and “feeling alive” to you?

When I first started drafting the post yesterday, one of the first thoughts that came to my mind was the old Dolly Parton quote “don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”. This is a great quote that applies to this prompt; but I have written about this one before.

As i was doom-scrolling at work a couple hours later, I can across another – and I think – more fitting quote that has been reworded and attributed to multiple sources over the years: “the goal is to die with memories, not dreams”. Therein lies the difference between living and “feeling alive”.

Dreams are great. They give us something to live for; something to aspire to. But dreams with no action are just that – dreams. We accumulate memories through action; and action makes us “feel alive”

Wooderson was right.

I equate “living” in this prompt with simply surviving. Too often, far too many of us fall into this trap. We get caught up in the daily grind: wake up, go to work, eat, sleep, repeat. This daily grind is extremely easy to fall into. Hell, survival is instinctive. In this 21st century world, you have to have a job to pay the bills. And you need to pay the bills to stay alive

But it is equally important to have fun. Make memories. “Suck the marrow out of life” as Thoreau once said. Feeling alive can co sisters of anything that suits your personality fancy: traveling, a dance dinner, attending a baseball game at all 30 MLB cities.

For me, sometimes it’s hard to break down and spend some money for something totally frivolous. But it’s those seemingly frivolous things that make all the hard work we do worth while. Heck, I still talk about seeing the different baseball stadiums that I have over the last few years.
