The Reluctant Patriot

A DISCLAIMER: when I thought of this title, I had no idea that Francis Scott Key was referred to “the reluctant patriot”. I just heard the title somewhere and it was very deep in my subconscious.

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

When do you feel the most patriotic? Alternatively, why don’t you feel patriotic?

This is a pretty bad time to be an American. In fact, I’ve never been more ashamed to be an America than I am here in 2925. And I think we all know the reason why. Of course, long before The Commander in Cheet-Oh, returned to the White House, my patriotism has had its shares of ebbs and flows.

the day that I felt the most patriotic in my life was January 20, 2009. That was the day that Barack Obama was an president of the United States. At the time, I felt it my country had reached a watershed moment. I thought that things were going to be different going forward, both politically and socially in the United States.

For an honorable mention, January 20, 2021 was another moment where I felt extremely patriotic in my life. Then of course was the day that Joe Biden was inaugurated as president. It’s not so much that I was such a Biden supporter as it is that I was so anti-Trump I was hoping, again, the things were going to be different going forward.

Without a doubt, the day that I felt least patriotic was January 6, 2021. That of course was the day that Trump supporter storm on the capital, in the hopes of halting the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

Likewise, I must give a dishonorable mention to January 20, 2025, the day that Donald Trump was inaugurated for the second time. This one, of course, coming after being convicted of 34 felonies; along a laundry list of other incidents that should have automatically disqualified him for the presidency.

Of course, it doesn’t escape me that the four days I listed is both my most patriotic least patriotic moments are all fairly recent. I’m really not sure how I’m gonna make it through another three years and eight months of this current presidential administration. I’m trying to keep up on news headlines. But at the same time, I don’t want to get myself overwhelmed with the bad news.

But the Tigers won Friday night, so I’m thanking heaven for the little things right now.
