They still put their pants on one leg at a time

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

Have you ever been disappointed by a famous person, or someone you looked up to?

I haven’t had a lot of celebrity runs in my life, so I can’t say that I’ve necessarily been “disappointed” in a famous person that I met. In fact, most of my celebrity runs can be narrowed down to Hank Aaron and George Clinton But, like so many of us living today in the 21st-century, I feel like we are learning more about celebrities personal lives than ever before.

It’s a different world

For an example as to the way, the media used to treat celebrities with kids, gloves, I always go back to a story about Babe Ruth that was explained in the Ken Burns documentary Baseball. A sports writer, whose name escapes me right now, was telling the story about one time that the New York Yankees were traveling on a train during a road trip. Several sports writers were riding along the same passenger train as a team.

One time, in the middle of the night, two naked women, presumably prostitutes, come streaking through the passenger car. Immediately behind them, and runs Babe Ruth himself, start naked, running after the women.

It was understood back, then that that kind of stuff simply wasn’t reported. Back in roots day, people, and talk about the fact that he was a womanizer or even that he drank too much. In fact, the story went that Babe Ruth’s voice were hot dogs and beer; further, adding to the mystique of him being an overgrown manchild.

That kind of stuff wouldn’t fly today. In fact, with a 24 hour new cycle, the 500 channel TV universe, and social media, that’s simply not possible. Information gets out too quickly today.

But the fact it is, as I’ve said before, Americans worship their entertainers. What’s more, we’ve even started placing truly talentless hacks like social media influencers, and reality TV show stars on the same pedestal as actors, musicians, and athletes.

Although I know better, I choose to get caught up in the public image or the way that the public perceives a particularly famous person. So when a story breaks about them getting in the trouble with the law, or drug drugs, or some kind of domestic issue, I do feel disappointed, I guess.

As much as Americans love their celebrities, we love their downfall just as much. Pay attention to the public meltdowns of celebrities like Britney Spears and Amanda Bynes as we do to a literal train wreck. It’s grotesque, and yet we can’t bring ourselves to look away.

But back to the question at hand, at my age, I don’t think I’m really disappointed by Famous people. I understand that they are human. They have their flaws, and they do make mistakes, just like the rest of us.
