New shoes and a milestone day

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What is a recent purchase you are excited about?

This is going to sound corny, but I’m excited about getting a brand new pair of tennis shoes, or sneakers as they’re more commonly known.

I’m not a “sneaker head” or anything. In the contrary, I’ve needed a new pair of tennis shoes for quite some time. Probably even before my school year ended. While my last pair of sneakers weren’t falling apart or anything, they had taken on enough wear and tear to look unprofessional at work. Besides, as a teacher, the last thing I want is to get blasted by my students for having a ratty looking pair of sneakers!

I ordered my new shoes right about the same time that I got Kid 2 some new shoes. His, he needed more out of necessity. He is getting bigger (what feels like) every day. Getting Kid 2’s new shoes also coincided with me doing some birthday shopping for him. In fact, today is his birthday.

A milestone

Kid 2 is 10 now. Out of single-digits. To me, he’ll always be my “little guy”. With kid 2 being on the autism spectrum, there’s always going to be some “quirks” with him; ways that he’ll need a different level of attention than Kid 1 did at his age. But I am amazed at the young man he’s gradually becoming. I’ll always feel like I need to take a more “measured” approach with Kid2, but then I’ll see and hear him do and say thugs that leave me shocked.

As an adult, there will be moments where I think I’m being subtle: where things are going right over Kid 2’s head. Not only is he catching it, but Kid 2 will end up being the smartest person in the room. I remember last fall when Kid 1 came to town to look at the University of Michigan, kid 2 did this “spot-on” impression of Mother. Let’s just say that I had to go into my “teacher mode“ and muster up every ounce of willpower to not bust out laughing right along with my boys.

I’m excited that kid is with me this week. I’m even more excited that his birthday falls right before July 4. This holiday, which is clearly morphing into a holiday weekend or even a holiday week gets extended one day because of Kid 2’s birthday.

Back to the question at hand…

But to answer today’s prompt I’m very excited about the new shoes that I’ve purchased it only for kid 1, but for myself as well. they are probably long overdue for both of us.
