Rob Reviews: Jurassic World: Rebirth

For his birthday yesterday, Kid 2 and I went to go see Jurassic World: Rebirth. It is the 7th entry in the Jurassic franchise, going all the way back to 1993’s Jurassic Park

This latest installment, a greedy, rich guy hires a group of mercenaries to extract blood from three of the mutant dinosaurs seen in the few previous Jurassic World films. He believes that because of their large hearts, dinosaur blood may contain the key to preventing heart disease in humans. But rather than driven by doing this for humanity, he sees how much money there is to be made in such a wonder drug.

The movie wasn’t terrible, but it definitely gave me the feeling that the Jurassic franchise has descended into the level of typical monster movies. In my opinion, the Jurassic World films are built on the idea of that “regular dinosaurs are boring. So we need to make more mutant, hybrid, mash ups to be even scarier still”.

I feel as if dorector Gareth Edward’s (Godzilla, Rogue One) tried to remind of some moments from the earlier, classic Jurassic Park movies: some of the sense of wonder at seeing the dinosaurs for the first time – right along with traces of the original John Williams score. Also, there were a few tender moments with the kids trying to feed the dinosaurs The final scene of the movie evokes memories of the parting shot of the original Jurassic Park.

The movie had some entertaining well once. Some good scares, some hero escapes. The characters, when they weren’t trying so hard to be tough, had moments where they were somewhat likable. However, the main antagonist of the film was ultimately, just a stereotypical mustache-twirling bad guy.

FINAL TAKE: if you’re a fan of the Jurassic… franchise, it’s worth checking out for more casual fans like myself, you can pass on this one. It honestly didn’t add anything to the franchise. The title is a bit misleading, as I was expecting something of a soft reboot. Unfortunately, it feels as if Universal will make yet another sequel once they feel a little short on cash. Having said that, I don’t expect Jurassic Park: Rebirth to take the box office by storm.
