I think about this topic a lot. I’ve even written before about The Loneliness Epidemic. But today, I was thinking about which one is most important to have an a man’s life: a good woman? The guys around him?
I can only speak for my own personal experience, but when we were younger, I think we just take for granted the idea that “our boys“ are always going to be there. Or more to the point, that we will naturally hide our own group, our own brotherhood.
The harder part when we’re young, is figuring out how to talk to members of the opposite sex. It’s a juggling act between being clear in your intentions, not coming across as too desperate; finding that level of assertiveness, where one is neither too aggressive nor too passive. These are our skills that men spend years trying to develop let alone perfect.
But in the case of socializing, we take for granted the fact that we’re always going to be able to find friends. We assume that we will always find our group. The truth is, the older you get, the harder it becomes to find your “brotherhood“.
I think this is because once we finally get into a relationship, that becomes the primary focus of our lives for many of us, myself included. Don’t stop to look around to be sure their boys are still right by their side. In my own circle of friends, I was the first person to get married in the first person to get divorced. Now, nearly 20 years later – 10 years removed from my divorce – I feel like I’m still trying to rediscover myself.
No one ever talks about how lonely it is being a man. The idea of men having to have a brotherhood seems contradictory when men are generally expected to be such self contained units in today’s world.
My problem right now is I have neither a good woman nor a close circle of friends in my life at this time. There are a few women who are “in my orbit“ but there’s nothing serious with any of them right now. And as for a brotherhood, how many guys really have a close circle of male friends at this stage of their life?
