Pepping up Roses

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

Disregarding your birth month, which month is your favourite?

Beyond my birth month, April, my favorite month of the year is probably June. I’ve written on this blog, probably ad nausea, about how much I love summer. And most of the reasons that I love summer are also the same reasons that I love the month of June.

For much of my life, the academic school year has ended in the month of June. There were a few years where I taught in South Carolina, where we actually got out at Memorial Day weekend, but I digress. But as I said before, both as a young kid, as a college student, and finally as a teacher, summer break has always been the endgame, in terms of the academic calendar.

In June I saw a charming group
Of roses all begin to droop
I pepped them up with chicken soup!
Sprinkle once, sprinkle twice
Sprinkle chicken soup with rice

-Maurice Sendak Chicken Soup With Rice

We also celebrate Father’s Day in the month June. As a father of myself, I like the idea of getting some sort of acknowledgment for the things I do as a dad. I still think that dad’s get ripped off, when you stop and think about all the hoopla surrounding Mother’s Day, but again I digress.

June 21 brings us the summer solstice, or the longest day of the year. Some people mistakenly call the 21st the first day of summer“ but I don’t know a place on earth where the weather magically becomes on this date.

School ends. The days are still getting longer. Fathers Day. Just by virtue of the fact that it’s my birthday month, April will always be my favorite month. However June is a very close second.
