As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What is your ideal morning routine, and what stops you from making it a reality?
I like to think of myself as a “reluctant morning person“. Being a teacher almost automatically makes me have to be an early bird. I get up earlier than a lot of my friends who work 9 to 5 office jobs but of course the flipside of that as I get out earlier in the afternoon and they do as well.
As a lifelong WWE fan, I’ve always liked a quote by Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, which I will probably mess up here, but he once said “when you go to bed at night, I’m still up. And when you get up in the morning, I’ve already been up”.
Heenan, of course, was alluding to the fact that he was constantly plotting and scheming against wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, and Andre the giant. personally, I was like the ladder part of the “”when you get up, I’ve already been up”. That’s been my approach to being an early bird. I like the idea of getting up in the morning and getting my day started when most other people are still asleep.
For me, it’s always been about establishing momentum at the moment I wake up each morning. If I can get myself off to a quick start, I could be extremely productive for the day. My only problem with that is sometimes like it was so overboard that the next day I end up doing very little, out of exhaustion.
But my ideal morning routine would have me working out or exercising every morning before work. The only thing that’s really holding me back from that is my lack of discipline. Doing this would require that I go to bed earlier than I’ve probably gone to sleep in a very long time. I figure I would probably have to get to the gym by 5 AM in order to make this happen.
At this point, I just wanna get myself back into my “teacher mode” in the next few weeks. It’s tough enough getting used to my day-to-day schedule at the beginning of the year, without adding anything into it like a pre-work workout
