Beating the rush

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What is a daily inconvenience you face?

Life is full of inconveniences. Some days, just getting out of bed and facing the world is inconvenient enough.

But on a typical workday, I’d say that traffic is probably the biggest inconvenience I face. Thankfully as a teacher, I start and finish work a bit earlier than the typical 9-5 weekday worker. So, for the most part, I miss rush-hour traffic.

I like to think that I try to be smart about avoiding crowds, like shopping at “off” hours. But every now and then, you need something at the last minute. For instance, this past February, I found myself in a grocery store less than two hours before the start of the Super Bowl. When I got into lion, I noticed that there were roughly 10 people in front of me, trying to check out. Trying to break the tension, I said out loud to no one in particular “I know! I’ll come to the grocery store an hour before the Super Bowl. You know, to beat the crowd”. Comments like that on entertain me if they don’t entertain anyone else.

But trying to arrive at places early or during off-hours is especially difficult for someone who grew up in a household that was perpetually late for everything.

Arriving on time, and even early for events might be the one good habit I picked up from my relationship with X1. Having said that, there is a point where you can be in politely or even rudely early for an event. X1’s mother, or my former mother-in-law, excelled at this. X1 used to tell me stories about growing up and arriving two hours before the start of a swim meet. There would be times where she would be sitting with her mom in the car, as the only car in the parking lot when the coaches who were there to literally unlock the doors for the event, arrived.

There’s an old saying about punctuality that has been attributed to the military. Whether or not it actually comes from the military, I’m not sure. But they say a “if you’re supposed to be somewhere at 2 o’clock and you get there at 2 o’clock. You’re late. If you get there at 10 minutes before two, you’re on time”. This is the approach I like to take to punctuality.

When it comes to parties, or other social gatherings, I do like to arrive before most other people do. There’s something about walking into a situation and having all eyes upon me that not a big fan of.
