On Monday, X1 and I moved Kid 1 into his dorm at the university of Wisconsin. As the title says, the kid has gone to college.
It is truly ironic. After all, X1 and I met when we were at orientation for our college nearly 30 years ago. Seeing kid one start his journey through this wonderful experience called college has me feeling… Old. He has no idea what’s in store for him right now. The things he’s going to experience it in the next four, or five years are going to unfold to determine the course of his life. He really is just starting the adventure.
Walking into his dorm with his things Monday morning, I got all the feels. I was beaming with excitement for him. I was extremely proud of him for everything that he achieved in order to get here. If I’m being totally honest, I’m a little bit envious of him; knowing that he’s just starting the adventure and understanding that this will be a life-altering experience for him.
His dorm is about what I’d expect a freshman dorm to be. It’s small. Being basically a bedroom for he and hos roommate. The dorm even has community bathrooms; which I think the freshman dorms at Michigan State University have as well. I hope it will motivate him more to get out and socialize.
As for the school itself, I was once again overwhelmed by the enormity of the campus. It reminds me so much of the university of Michigan campus in that it’s spread out through the city of Madison. Wisconsin is a big school. I think it would be very easy for kid wanting to get lost in the proverbial shuffle there. X1 and I were discussing it on Monday. We’re both really hoping that he will take the initiative and get out and be social with his fellow classmates as well as his neighbors in the dorm.
I ended up getting on the road late Monday night. As it stands, I actually took a nap when Kid 1 an X1 went to meet Kid 1’s roommate for dinner. I only saw the roommate briefly. From when I gather, I think he and Kid 1 going to get along pretty well. At least I hope so. I know a lot of people have their own “roommate from Hell“ stories. I hope that’s not the case with Kid 1. and I’ll be really pissed if kid 1 ends up being a “roommate from hell” himself.
But, like so many other things in my life, I have faith that it’s going to go well for him. I know he’s going to be OK. I know the school year is going to go well for him too.
I got a kid in college. I got a kid in college on a scholarship. I got a kid who is about to experience the most amazing four years of his entire life. I’m just excited to be a witness. I don’t mean to toot my own horn. Yeah I do…
