I grew up in a baseball family, so take this for what you will…
Sunday , the NFL’s 2025-26 season began. Well, technically, the season began with a Thursday night game on Amazon Prime Video. For most of the league , the season started in earnest Sunday.
I know, football is the most popular sport in the United States. And in some parts of the country, the fandom borders almost religious reverence. That’s not much of an exaggeration, at least not according to the 2015 movie Concussion:
The NFL owns a day of the week. The same day the Church used to own. Now it’s theirs.
Dr. Cyril Wecht
I think my mixed feelings about football are kind of a double whammy. The NFL owns Sundays. And ever since I was a little kid, I would always feel a little bit of anxiety set in on Sunday as I knew I was going to have to gear up for the week ahead. Unfortunately, that’s gotten no better as I’ve gotten older.
Then of course there’s the fact that I associate baseball and summer with good times. So by default, I’m automatically going to be more of a baseball fan than a football fan.
On top of this is the fact that, up until fairly recently, the Lions haven’t done a whole lot of winning in the last 60 years. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize that it’s very hard for me to rationalize blindly supporting a team, who, for most of their history, has had no interest in putting a winning product on the field. why should I pour my harder money into what has been, for most of my life, a substandard product?
Yes, I’m sure some people out there are going to look at the Detroit Tigers overall record and say that they’re not a great baseball team either. The difference is the Tigers have won. They have gone to the World Series. They have made numerous playoff appearances over the years. and earlier this season, the eclipse the Lions as the Detroit sports team most likely to win a championship first.
But this lions team… Their performance on Sunday reminded me of Lions teams of the pre-Covid era. I must’ve didn’t watch any of the game and only listen to parts of it on the radio. But from what I heard, they couldn’t get much of anything done yesterday. Granted, it’s only one game. We’ll have to see how the rest of the season unfolds. But this did not feel like the Lions teams of the last two or even three seasons.
