As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What is something you didn’t understand adults complaining about when you were a child, but you now understand?
As I sat here thinking about a response to this prompt, it occurred that there a lot of things that adults complained about that I didn’t understand as a child. Most of these things were pulled under the umbrella known as “Grown-up stuff“.
The economy
When you’re a kid, you might have some money, but you’re, in all likelihood, not making any money. This, you’re not making money, you’re not buying things. And when you’re not buying things, you’re not really paying much attention to how much things cost. More specifically you’re not paying attention to the rise or fall on the cost of living. Tbus when you hear every adult and every politician on television talking about this intangible thing called “the economy“ you really have no idea what they’re talking about.
As a child of the 80s who came of age in the late 80s and early 90s, I didn’t really pay much attention to the economy until a recession hit at the United States around 1990 or 1991. At this point I was 16 and 17 years old. I was working myself, I’ll be a part time. And I didn’t come to the realization that my parents weren’t made of money and that things were getting a little bit more expensive and no one was making more money to keep up with the increase in the cost of living.
Of course, now that I’m older things are pretty much still the same. Things continue to get more expensive, portions continue to get smaller. Health insurance covers less than less with every passing year. And yet, our wages aren’t going up to keep up with the increasing cost of living.
I really didn’t want this to get all social – political, but here we are.
