Having posted for 800+ consecutive days, I’ve been branching out to other websites for writing prompt ideas. But every now and then, I will come back and revisit a prompt from WordPress. Usually I do this because my attitudes have changed on a subject. But once in a great while, I do this because I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I’m in the exact same situation I was a year ago at this time. Today definitely falls into the latter…
I am super embarrassed to admit this, but I am still trying to finish Anna Karenina. Basically there been more days where I don’t read the book than there have been days where I actually read the book.
I can come up with some pretty good excuses as to why I still haven’t finished Anna… though. I’m an English teacher, and during the school year I basically have to read whatever I’m teaching. Kind of a cop out, but it works. Or I could also say that I have something resembling a social life and I don’t always have time to pick up a book between that, my job, and dealing with my kids. OK, that one sounds a little bit more convincing.
I figure I can always use excuse that it’s Tolstoy. His stuff is incredibly heavy. As it stands, I feel like I need a family tree or a float chart to keep track of all of the different characters in this book. How do you feel like just as I’m starting to get back into the book and really figure out which characters are who is about the time that I end up putting the book down again.
I was reading that Anna… was originally published in a monthly magazine, one chapter per issue; which is probably why he has several chapters where the characters going off on their own political tirades. “Let me tell you what’s wrong with the Communists…” things like that. Reading bits like that, considering their historical context, is especially interesting now looking back as the communist revolution would take place in Russia about 40 years after Anna… was published.
But in my defense, I have cranked out about 220 pages in the last month or so. Once I got into the book, I was having trouble putting it back down . I’m trying to do that again. As of now, I’m roughly about halfway through. But I’m trying to see if I can finish reading it before the end of the year that might be a big ask.
But I will finish the book. Eventually. If for no other reason than because I’m too stubborn not too.
