As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today
What can you do today to be a smidgen better of a person than yesterday?
A while back I wrote a review for James Gunn’s Superman from this past summer. I talked about how I think that the movie is something of a cultural touchstone. For weeks – even a few months – after the movie premiered, I saw people on social media absolutely gushing about the film and the themes it portrayed. A lot of viewers embraced the idea of being good, just for the sake of being good. Not looking for rewards, not looking for good karma or brownie points with God. Many people sought to adopt the ideals of the Man of Steel himself – doing the right thing simply because it’s the right thing to do.
I know that a lot of people, after having seen Superman I’ve tried to make themselves better people. As corny as it may sound, I like to think that I am trying to do the same. And no, most of us can’t lead tall buildings in a single bound, but we can do small things to help other people out. I’ve said before, and I will say again: small things add up to big things. So here is a list of some ways that I can try to make myself a smidgen of a better person every single day:
- Holding doors for people
- Occasionally yielding the right-of-way to someone trying to enter traffic.
- Giving to those less fortunate, particularly around the holidays
- Volunteering your time with a charity or nonprofit organization
I suppose these are all things I can do to be a kinder person.
Of course, this is a short list of things that I could do to be a better person:
- Eat better
- Exercise more
- Learn to let go of things that I have no control over
- Listening to people, don’t just hear them – even more than people want to be agreed with, people just want to be heard. They want to know that their thoughts their feelings and their ideas matter.
Of course, these are all small, incremental changes. Perhaps as humans, that’s the best we can do: small changes, one day at a time, as Superman himself reminds us in this clip:
