Writing the Future (One Digit at a Time)

As WordPress continues to recycle old prompts, I pulled another prompt from The Coffee Monsterz Co to respond to today

What are you going to do differently tomorrow?

On a purely literal level, I’m going to start writing “26” when I write the date instead of “25.”

Seriously though, I know this should be a companion piece to my blueprint for 2026, but right now I’m just enjoying the last vestiges of the holiday season. Kid 2 is with me until Sunday, just before we both head back to school, and I’m soaking up that time.

As I mentioned in that blueprint, I don’t have terribly extensive plans for the coming year. I’m not looking for a total overhaul; I’m looking for intentionality. I want to move more. I want to shift my eating habits—not because they are terrible, but because I need to make a point of cooking for myself a few times a week instead of relying on the convenience of eating out.

Then there is the East Coast baseball road trip. I’ve been talking about this for years, and 2026 is the year I finally want to move it from the “potential” phase to a concrete itinerary.

The world seems to get more intense with every passing year. Perhaps that’s just because I’m older, wiser, and more aware of the noise around me. But for me, New Year’s is a time for eternal optimism. It’s the window where I hope things will be better than the year before.

This isn’t to say that 2025 was a bad year—far from it. In many ways, it was a very good year. My toast to all of you would be the same words Jay-Z uses in “Young Forever”: May the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows.

I realize the coming year will likely provide challenges I can’t yet imagine. At the same time, I believe 2026 will also be marked by just as many triumphs and high marks.
