Five years ago today, I was glued to my TV after a day of virtual teaching. My school was having a virtual staff meeting, but because I was absolutely floored by the attempted insurrection on Capitol Hill, I muted my microphone and turned off my camera just to process what I was seeing.
I recently re-read my “Billboards” post from last year where I reflected on these events. I don’t really have much to add to what I said then, other than a profound sense of irony.
Of course, I naively thought there was no way Trump could ever get re-elected. And yet, here we are. Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people. I can say with conviction that I was on the right side of history—whenever this living nightmare ends.
The “nightmare” has certainly expanded in the last few days. We’ve seen the escalation in Venezuela and the abduction of Maduro. I’m not going to pretend that Maduro being out of power is a bad thing, but is it really the United States’ place to bring about regime change in sovereign countries? Between the threats against the President of Mexico and the determination to “take Greenland,” NATO has certainly taken notice. Whether or not anything will be done remains to be seen.
Looking back at that “Billboards” post, I’m stunned at what has transpired in the last 12 months. I am grotesquely curious to see what I’ll be reflecting on exactly 12 months from today.
If I had that freeway billboard right now, it would be a simple, stark white background with just five words:
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
