Geez, I don’t know if I can name just one. I’ve got three that I can think of.
I want to be published someday. Writing a book has always been my dream. Maybe it’s a total ego stroke—I don’t know—but I want to see people reading my words. I want to experience seeing someone with a book open that was written by me, with their total attention focused on it. I’m even willing to deal with them hating it, as long as they have an opinion on it.
The closest thing I’ve ever known to this sensation in my life was when I was teaching at a small Catholic school in Detroit. I wanted my students to write about a book of their choice, so I let them grab books off my classroom library. Even just seeing kids walking through the halls between classes, carrying books that had my last name written along the page edges in black Sharpie, was flattering. I caught myself thinking, Yeah, they’re reading that because they got it from me.
I can’t imagine what a mind-trip it would be to see somebody reading a book that had my name on the front of it, or maybe even my photo on the back as an “about the author” kind of thing. I think writing a book would be my legacy to the world. Maybe it wouldn’t be a nationwide bestseller or anything, but I want to leave some lasting contribution to the world, even beyond my children. I want people to read my words, know what I had to say, and know that something I said mattered.
I want to be financially comfortable. I don’t have to be rich; I just want to know that I’m able to pay all my bills. I don’t want to burden my kids or anybody else with any of my debts. I’m not asking for a lot. I think this is another part of the reason I’m looking at going into school administration—it would be better pay.
Yeah, okay, I’m a sucker. I still want to find my happily ever after. I want to find my person. I’m at a point where I know that I’ll be okay on my own, because I already am okay on my own. And yes, I’m going to invoke those exact words that so many people put on their dating apps: “It’s not that I need somebody, I want somebody” to share my life with. I’m working on that one right now.
Rebuilding a life takes grit, consistency, and a lot of ‘Option C’ thinking. Having crossed the 1,000-day milestone, I’m now charting the territory beyond. The mission remains the same: No glitz. Just the work. New to the blog? Start your journey here to see the blueprint and the ‘Tricorder’ perspective behind the rebuild.
