If you had to give up one word that you use regularly, what would it be?
This is a three-way tie for me. If I had to give up one word (or three) that I use, it would be um / uh / ah
For native English speakers, these three words are filler. They don’t even really mean anything. They are used when we lose our train of thought, or to just fill dead air.
I had heard a talk radio host speaking about these words, and how he was trained to not use them. Ever since I heard that, I noticed that the guy never stammers when he speaks on air. That is a skill that I would like to perfect.
As a school teacher, sometimes I will listen to myself as I’m speaking to my students. I hear myself use those words, and it makes me feel like an idiot. Also, the more you notice yourself using these kinds of words, the more it FEELS like you use them.
