Rebuilding Rob

One of the unfortunate realities of teaching (teaching English specifically) is most of the reading I do during the school year is school-related. With that in mind, I’ve been plugging along with Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck for a while.

The title is quite misleading. When i first saw the title, I thought this was something more akin to the “Fratire” fair from the likes of Tucker Max back in the early 2000s. But …Subtle… is something in between self-help and a philosophy.

SPOILER ALERT: …Subtle… doesn’t tell the readers to “not give a fuck”; rather Manson argues people need to give a fuck…about the right things. That is the central point of the book: most people care too much, or place too much value, on things that aren’t important. Manson also talks about not sweating the small stuff, letting go of the things that we cannot control and accepting responsibility for our actions; not only how they affect ourselves but how they affect others as well.

I’m not really one to follow many celebrities on-line, but Mark Manson is an exception. His social media posts are more related to his work: excerpts from his books or just some plain-old deep thoughts.

I’ve only read about one-half of the book so far. A more comprehensive review will be coming later. In the meantime, not only do I recommend …Subtle… but I also plan on reading his follow-up Everything is F*cked.
