What’s the first impression you want to give people?
It’s not an accident that “you never get a second chance to make a first impression“ became a cliché. The funny thing about clichés is that they’re usually true.
Meeting someone, I want to give them the impression that I’m affable, intelligent, and confident. I know that’s kind of a lot to ask of myself the first time I meet someone, but that is what I strive for.
The first thing I thought of when I saw this prompt was job interviews. Then I thought of going on a first date. When you’re going to an interview for a new job, you are essentially trying to sell yourself. The same thing applies to going on a first date. You really want to put your best foot forward.
Body language is almost as important at the confidence you exude. Make eye contact. Acknowledging what someone is saying also lets them know you are interested and listening. Show empathy when someone else has the floor. My experience has been that when you let someone know you’re interested in what they have to say, they will listen to you. Most people just want to be heard. This is a lesson that one can apply almost any aspect of life.
