This past week, during our Thanksgiving holiday break, I weighed myself on a scale. I won’t say exactly how much I weighed, but this is the heaviest I remember being.

That ends now.

After months of procrastinating, I went back to the gym. No more excuses about being sick or having bad shoes (I got a new pair of shoes over the weekend.) I need to make some lifestyle changes.

I turn 50 this spring. I’m not getting any younger and losing weight isn’t going to get any easier. Neither The Old Man, nor either of my grandfathers lived past 70 (for various reasons). Twenty years isn’t enough time for everything I still want to to.

I’ve got too much of a gut, the start of a double-chin, not enough muscle and not enough energy. When I get out of bed or out of a chair my legs ache. Some may say that thorns what happens when you get old, but I don’t have to like it.

I didn’t like what I saw last week.

While the energy I’m getting is from junk food, I’m not talking about a dietary overhaul. When I got really serious about working out 10 years ago, I found myself just naturally not craving junk foods anymore. That’s the place I’m just hoping to get back to.

My three goals on this new challenge are:

  • lose weight
  • add muscle
  • improve my cardio

I’m already thinking ahead specific weight loss goals and motivation for myself. I dread the thought of having to splurge for new clothing. If, however, I lose so much weight that I have to start buying new clothes, than I would consider that a reward. I have a weight loss goal in mind; but it’s not so rigid that if I miss, I’ll be upset. Initially, I want to get to my “Batman weight” 210. From there I will look to getting as low as 180. If however, I’m somewhere between 180 and more muscular 210, I will be happy.

I’ve already got a new haircut in mind, and a plan to finally say goodbye my beard. That will happen once I see some progress. If this goes well, I want to look like a different man by Spring time.

I’m getting a head start on my New Year’s resolutions. But there more to come. For now, its time to get to work.

    Weight can creep up on you. I can attest to that. I got down to my college weight recently, but it took a health scare to get me motivated. I try to find sustainable lifestyle changes. This past holiday seemed to disrupt my flow a bit. It’s a reminder that I have to continually work at it.

      I did a good job of losing weight and getting in shape after my divorce…we years ago. Right now. I’m just trying to ease back into it. I know once I make it a habit it, I can get hooked on going to the gym again.

      Thank you for your kind words! My problem is I’m trying to pretty much burn fat and gain muscle at the same time. I have to remind myself that my weight loss won’t be as drastic as I would like it to be. I’m looking at some other options as far as working out as well. But I know I really have to start eating differently too.
